FAQ
Yes, you will need a weighted keys. This means that the keys have a spring to the mechanism that feels like a feel piano. This is important to developing finger muscles.
No, it’s one of the easier instruments to learn. Anyone can press down on a note and make it sound but to play well takes hundreds of hours.
I like to think in terms of hours played.
- 2 hours – you will learn how to sit and allocate a finger to a key. You will learn your 5 white notes and work out some simple tunes.
- 10 hours – you are learning some harder tunes and getting through the first pages of your book.
- 20 hours – sounding better, getting faster, reaching higher and lower, jamming with friends.
- 50 hours – intermediate level.
- 100+ hours – you will be able to play in ensembles or bands. You will be playing the music you love and music is part of your life.
My youngest student was 5 years old. At this young age I like to teach both the child and the parent so at home they can share the fun.
An electric piano with weighted keys, inbuilt speakers and Bluetooth connection. New, or near new pianos are usually reliable and are good to learn on. The old antiques that someone is giving away I would avoid.
For a young child you may wish to buy a cheaper non-weighted key instrument to see if they show an interest. Once you have decided to take the commitment to take lesson you will need the weighted key instruments. About $1,000 AUS . . You can buy a used instrument but you should ask a keyboard player to try it out first. If you buy online make sure they have a phone number you can call and a system for returns and repairs.
About $4,000AUS will buy you a good piano that will last for many years if it is maintained.
